High Speed Photography and Lighting Needs

The automotive industry uses various types of crash testing every day in order to evaluate and improve technology while meeting demanding government regulations. The application of high speed photography utilizing two or three dimensional evaluation and test analysis is the modern tool of choice. While high speed cameras have become more sophisticated, they seldom solve all the problems facing the photographer. Along with camera optics, light is the most critical element in achieving the desired result of high quality images using the desired frame rate and depth of focus. In a fraction of a second, all critical elements of the impact must be captured by high speed cameras with the right resolution and clarity. Without the right light this is simply impossible.

Atlas provides customized lighting solutions which enable high-speed cameras to take high quality images. Images, even at high frame rates, are generated with realistic color, great contrast, and excellent depth of focus.


The HIGH-S-LIGHT series offers custom integrated lighting systems that are designed to match the specific illumination requirements of various test configurations.

HIGH-S-LIGHT systems provide:

The M=LIGHT LED is the latest LED product innovation for overhead and static air bag lighting systems for crash test facilities. New LED technology offers advantages over conventional lighting solutions - it significantly reduces thermal load (heating) of the dummies or air bag systems allowing each test to run within the specified test temperature range, and increases the value of the data set provided. In addition, operating the M=LIGHT in flash mode synchronized with the high speed cameras, can result in energy savings of up to 80%.

Onboard Lighting

Crash tests are particularly challenging for onboard lights. Impact resistant design is critical to reliable performance.

The Control System

For the performance of high-speed tests, a specifically defined time sequence must be followed.  Additionally, the lighting system needs to be reliably integrated into the master test control system as that is where optimum positioning and illumination configurations for each test are stored as complete files. This ensures that the lighting system will perform properly for each and every test.

At an increasing rate, crash test analysis is moving towards 3D. Therefore, multiple high-speed cameras, ideally of the same type (same type guarantees same data processing of synchronizing signals), take multiple views of one scenario. All cameras need to record simultaneously, while software then translates the 2D pictures into 3D images. Deviations in synchronization must be avoided, as any differences, even in microseconds, can distort/falsify the 3D analysis significantly.

The Positioning System

With over 40 years of experience, Atlas knows how to design and install the right positioning system that will meet your current and future testing needs.. HIGH-S-LIGHT systems can movea in all spatial directions (x-/y-/z-direction) and are fully rotational. Also, with special Speed Drive Positioning, Atlas systems can be positioned up to 3x faster than conventional systems. These systems are especially useful for all test facilities with large distances e.g. between crash-block and car-to-car areas.
